North eastern Scotland isn’t exactly Cornwall, and doesn’t scream “family friendly” at you when you hear its name – but that doesn’t mean it should be avoided until your children are stroppy teenagers (or not even obliged to holiday with you any more). Put some magic into the journey by indulging in the great British tradition of rail-travel – get yourself some cheap train tickets for the family, sit back, relax and let Scotland roll by in front of you.
So what are you waiting for? Here are four family-friendly attractions for you and your little ones to enjoy whilst visiting Aberdeen in all its Scottish glory.
It wouldn’t be a visit to Scotland without at least one trip to a castle, and this National Trust property is the ideal family day out. Fairytale turrets dot the estate and gargoyles peer over ledges as you wander below.
The gardens are a delight at any time of year (remember your waterproofs) where the little ones can run around, playing dungeons and dragons while you lounge under a tree with a picnic. If you’ve got time (or energy) don’t miss one of the many trails hidden within the estate for some wildlife spotting.
Baby changing facilities are easily accessible here, as well as there being an adventure playground for the pre-teens to get stuck in to – the ideal day out for every member of the family!
A great place in the city to spend time in the great outdoors, Hazelhead Park contains two golf courses, a pitch and putt, a gigantic children’s play area, a maze and a petting zoo. Phew!
Whether you need to get rid of some extra energy with a football, or fuel their want to be a vet when they get older, this is the perfect space to spend an hour or two with the children. There are also two rose gardens if you’re looking to wander in peace and quiet.
Old Aberdeen Treasure Trail
This is one family activity that will engage all family members. Click here to get your copy of the treasure trail, and you’re well on your way to a cheap and fun afternoon in Aberdeen. Answers to the clues are located on monuments and buildings dotted around the city – remember that some are trickier to find than others!
Stratosphere Science Centre
Aberdeen’s Stratosphere is Scotland’s first hands-on, interactive science centre and is ideal for a wet and windy day. There are exhibits, classes and shows that cater for all ages – from the science of food to baby sensory classes to touchy-feely workshops exploring the world of bugs. Whatever your children are fascinated by, they’re sure to find it at the Stratosphere.
