ARE you one of those families who are forever prepared with wellies and rain jackets or do you reach your destination to realise that you've forgotten something crucial for your trip? Camilla Chafer tells us what she has stashed in the boot.
Having been caught out in rain in sandals, had my boyfriend suggest a traipse through the rugged Lake District countryside while wearing, you guessed it, sandals, and forgetting a picnic blanket on more occasions that I care to count, I think I've finally sorted out my car boot essentials. Let's take a look…
In permanent residence- there's a small collapsible Ikea basket with 'pac a mac' style rainjackets and a splendid assortment of wellies so we never get caught out by the rain again. They live in the car all year round. I also keep a small drawsting bag which I can stuff the coats in – it's a case of 'grab and go.'
I have a two year old so there's always a pushchair plus raincover. There's usually a small medical kit with wipes and plasters for blisters and grazes, adding insect spray and suncream for summer.
Seasonal rotation- For the wintery months I keep a few fleecy blankets, just in case. I favour the £2 Asda variety. Easy to wash, warm and at that price, I'm not going to get upset if they end up with muddy footprints. Spare gloves and hats often join the basket. In the summer, I add a rolled up picnic blanket with a carry handle ready for picnics.
For long drives- I often stock up with juice cartons and snacks prior to trips, which I can store in various pockets around the car. I also like to add an activity bag – a few items that the kids haven't seen before such as colouring pads and new pencils, and a list of car games to stave off the mental boredom.
Having stuff already there saves me searching for it on the day and means the dodgy weather doesn't get the better of us.
